Situation
Where the work sat
Zipcar sits in the same reliability class as other mobility platforms: members need onboarding that makes the product usable, reservation reminders that prevent no-shows, post-ride messaging that matches what just happened, and receipts that hold up under daily volume. Marketing Cloud has to carry both transactional certainty and lifecycle nuance.
That combination is where brittle Automation Studio chains and half-owned journeys usually crack.
What was broken
Why it was hard
Millions of daily receipts and reminders leave no room for on-call theater. If the person who understands the reservation event model is offline, the business still moves. Programs that separate “lifecycle marketing” from “transactional email” create two truths about the member and two places for bugs to hide.
Fragile automations, unclear contact states after a cancelled reservation, and generic agency coverage are how mobility brands end up firefighting the same incident every month.
What the Cell did
How we approached it
The Cell treats transactional and lifecycle messaging as one operating surface: automation, monitoring, and email engineering under a single accountable team. Named journey families stay wired to real membership events: member onboarding and activation, reservation reminder and no-show prevention, post-ride and receipt messaging, win-back for lapsed members, and extension or renewal paths where the product needs them. Triggered paths get the same rigor as campaign launches.

How it ran
Monitoring that watches volume and error shapes, not only open rates. Change control when product events evolve. QA samples that include edge states (cancel, no-show, extension). A named escalation when a send path stalls. Documentation of which automations are load-bearing so a “cleanup” project does not delete the receipt rail.
Outcome

Reliable high-volume transactional paths. Lifecycle journeys that stay wired to real reservation events. Operators who know SFMC automations and their failure modes, not just the Journey Builder happy path.

What buyers should take
